We’re partnering with artist Sara Alsum-Wassenaar on a project to restore local waterways.

Culture Works has partnered with local Artist/Designer Sara Alsum-Wassenaar to support an ecology and art project she has been weaving together in the Holland area for several years.  The project, Macatawa Manoomin Marsh, is aimed at inspiring watershed care while seeking to repair a legacy of thin vision. This wave of the project is funded by a grant from the Macatawa Area Coordinating Council and supported by the ODC. Previous funders include the Michigan STEM Network and GVSU.

Through a series of pop-up events at the waterfront, participants learned about native and invasive species of plants by looking closely and sketching them. Participants’ artwork will be incorporated into animated teaching tools, and will be displayed at a reception at DeGraaf Nature Center on November 7 from 10:00am-1:00pm. https://outdoordiscovery.org/events/watershed-art-party/

We also hosted a half-day Design Thinking workshop for 6th-12th graders with Sara Alsum-Wassenaar and Desiree Cain. Students explored creative problem-solving through hands-on exercises and developed experimental prototypes for solutions that transform aggressive invasive plant species into useful materials and new possibilities.
