For the second summer in a row, CultureWorks partnered with 3sixty, a neighbor-led nonprofit in the heart of Holland.

For the second summer in a row, we partnered with 3Sixty with a series of Pop-Up Art workshops on a few Tuesdays this summer, during which staff from CultureWorks and 3Sixty had drop-in art activities at the Rosa Parks Green gazebo.   Neighbors from the Eastcore Neighborhood, CultureWorks students, and other community members were able to creatively engage the following questions:

  • What is something you love about your neighborhood?
  • Draw your favorite place in your neighborhood.
  • Write a word or short sentence to describe your neighborhood.

Participants created images in response to these questions, which were then made into a graphic that was used at our organizations’ second annual Neighborhood Celebration, by being made into stencils for the sidewalk spray paint; screens for printing on T-Shirts and canvas bags; and designs used on a collaborative community mural.

Thanks to the Neighborhood Mini Grant from the City of Holland, we were able to co-host the Neighborhood Celebration again, where community members were able to use those designs from that graphic for those aforementioned activities.  Sidewalks became filled with stenciled designs of neighborhood-inspired drawings, while Silkscreen Marketing had the Printmobile present to create take-home merchandise.  Guests enjoyed ice cream from the Holland Police Department’s Polar Patrol truck while music by local musician, Jake Helder, played in the background.  People also worked on pollinator bee hotels for the 3Sixty Alleyway, as well as a three-panel mural of the Eastcore neighborhood.

This mural was finished by CW Program Assistant, Sammie Mikolitis, and will be hung in a variety of places around the neighborhood.  Keep your eyes peeled for its location, and stay tuned for continued partnership between 3Sixty and CultureWorks next summer.
