In our Earthworks class this semester, we launched a community-wide collaborative weaving project that looks at how we can build a stronger, more inclusive community across racial, ethnic, and cultural differences.
We’re drawing inspiration from the work of social weaver birds and the phenomenal artist, Nathalie Miebach. Social Weaver Birds build their enormous community-style nests using a combination of durable, firm structures (roots, sticks, and vines) and flexible materials (grass and other natural fibers).
Just like a strong nest benefits from firm structures and flexible fibers, a strong, inclusive community needs: STRUCTURES (laws, regulations, systems that support equality and fairness for all) and FLEXIBILITY (grassroots efforts, personal relationships, humility, and respect). The completed large-scale woven “nest” will be installed at the Outdoor Discovery Center for our student show, April 27.
