Does your child enjoy food and art? This 3-week series is perfect for young artists who also enjoy their sustenance. Each session is $40, or a discounted bundle of $105 for all three sessions. Feel free to have your child join us for one week, two weeks, or all three weeks. Descriptions of each session listed below:
You Are What You Eat Session One on 1/12: Soft Sculpture
Have you seen those sleeping bags shaped like a piece of pizza? What about the donut/flamingo/anything pool tube trend? All of these items in our culture today are inspired by an art form called Soft Sculpture. In Session Two of this series, which will explore the work of Claes Oldenberg: a Swedish-American sculptor who is known for his large-scale sculptures of things you see everyday. He is noted for his series of soft sculptures made from fabric, depicting tasty American treats like ice cream, hamburgers, and fries. Children will have the opportunity to reflect on food eaten within their own homes and cultures before creating their own take-home soft sculptures of food.
You Are What You Eat Session Two on 1/19: Let’s Eat!
This week is all about…well, FOOD! Students will learn about sustainable urban farming in our area from an Eighth Day Farm employee and what it looks like to grow food year-round. From there, we will consider how food is art by making spring rolls and considering their presentation from start to finish: from the ground, to the store, to our hands, to our bellies.
You Are What You Eat Session Three on 1/27: Cakes!
Session Three rounds out this series all about food by looking at American painter Wayne Thiebaud, who is known for his soft, colorful works depicting everyday objects (including cake). Children will have the opportunity to explore the concept of perspective by learning how to draw and paint cakes three-dimensionally. They’ll leave with a multimedia piece of work in Theibaud’s style, and a sweet tooth.
