Raising funds and making connections through fine art.
Many thanks to the volunteer crew from MillerKnoll, who joined us on Election Day for a design and screenprinting workshop during their Global Day of Purpose! MillerKnoll shuts down facilities around the world on the second day of November and encourages employees to volunteer with local organizations to make an impact on their communities.
In the midst of a particularly polarizing national election, we wanted to provide an opportunity for participants to connect with each other, minimize stress by engaging in creative problem solving, and help raise funds for affordable, accessible arts programs at CultureWorks.
Inspired by the artwork of Roberto Torres Mata and Paloma Núñez-Regueiro, we spent some time reflecting on on our personal experiences with migration and movement, and the places that have impacted us along the way.
Our lives and our extended families span a handful of continents and it was so good to hear about the specific sights, sounds, tastes, and traditions that continue to impact us in significant ways!
For this project, our Student Advisory Council prepped the background of a 30-foot-long piece of BFK Rives paper with ink. We looked at some of the work of Torres Mata and Núñez-Regueiro and spent time developing designs based on our own travels and connections to different parts of the world. Then we burned these designs onto screens and printed them in layers over the background. In the coming weeks, our Student Advisory Council will add final details, using spray paint, paint markers, and embroidery thread to create over 100 unique, collaborative works of art.
We’re so grateful to MillerKnoll Foundation for funding this volunteer event, and excited to see this collaborative artwork continue to evolve over the coming weeks!
