Celebrating Freedom with I Am Academy at Juneteenth!
What a joy to celebrate Juneteenth with I Am Academy again this summer at Kollen Park! Juneteenth, our newest national holiday, marks the effective end of slavery in America, when troops entered Galveston, TX on June 19, 1865 and declared that all slaves were free, by order of the Emancipation Proclamation.
For this year’s festival, we had a blast with printmaking, clay construction, and Basquiat-inspired crowns.
We looked at the work of Architect Diébédo Francis Kéré, who grew up in Burkina Faso and now runs his own design firm in Berlin. Working with clay and natural materials, participants constructed models of sustainable, well-ventilated structures inspired by Francis Kéré’s award-winning designs.
