Exploring the intersection of faith, art, and social activism
It’s always such a delight to provide visual arts leadership for students at Awakening, a week-long high school summer camp that equips emerging worship leaders.
This year’s theme was “My Story; My Song” and we explored the intersection of faith, art, and social activism, through the work of Corita Kent. Sister Mary Corita Kent was a nun who, during the mid 1960’s taught at the Immaculate Heart of Mary College in L.A. On Fridays, she brought her students to local art galleries and museums, where they were exposed to the emerging Pop Art movement.
We love Corita’s playful use of marketing slogans, street signs, lyrics, and quotes to engage and challenge popular conceptions of faith and activism. Students from Awakening used several screen printing techniques this week as they thought about ways to creatively express their own stories of faith through layers of color and text.
