Awake My Soul

Awakening is a week-long summer camp at Hope College where 9th-12th graders explore faith, worship, and the arts. This was CultureWorks’ 7th year leading visuals arts at Awakening, and this year’s theme, “Awake My Soul” guided our collective art project. Because light and color are some of the first things we experience upon waking, we used inks on watercolor paper to create panels that we assembled to mimic a giant stained glass window. Over the bright colors, Students added words and images related to their own experiences of being awake to God.

During the Tuesday morning chapel service, we invited students to come forward and add pieces to a collaborative collage of a sunrise as a reminder that each of them makes an important contribution to an awake community, and that we are more vibrant together.

The culminating event of Awakening is the Festival of Worship where students lead a series of short worship services. Their collaborative collage and installation offered a visual connection for their worship through words, music, and dance.
