Reflecting on themes of Lent through altered photographs.
Hope Church hosted a series of gatherings over the season of Lent, focused on reflection and creativity through the arts. As part of this series, CultureWorks helped lead an interactive workshop on April 1, using black and white photos taken by local artists. Thanks to all who joined us and thank you to our contributing artists!

In this workshop, we reflected on Lenten themes including darkness/light, death/new life/ and estrangement/reconciliation. As the leaders thought about these themes, we were struck by several things: 1) The unquestionable power of the Creator/Sustainer of life, as new life springs forth each year; 2) The magnificence of the natural world, and how it inspires awe and wonder through all our senses; and 3) The stark contrast of midwinter and Eastertide in our region.
We found these themes throughout Job 38-41. In these passages, we encounter crashing waves, garments of darkness, brilliant light, the recesses of the deep, and the expanse of the Earth. The screen designs we’re using represent some of the ways we see the Creator’s glory and power in the created world, including the cellular structure of an onion, a murmuration of starlings, an abstract field of flowers, and waves of sound and light. We printed black and white photos onto heavy weight water color paper, and altered them with screen printing, water colors, irridescent vinyl, and Posca markers.
