Celebrating loved ones with the Holland Museum & LAUP

As we transition from summer to fall and the dying leaves land at my feet, they invite me (Jaer) to reminisce on the past few months at CultureWorks.

Namely, we’ve been developing programming in collaboration with Latin Americans United For Progress (LAUP) and the Holland Museum for their Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration. Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday in which friends and families pay respect to deceased relatives or friends. Often, celebrations include food and some form of ofrenda, an offering for those no longer with us. One such ofrenda was at this year’s Día de los Muertos celebration at the Holland Armory. It was amazing to see the community come together to remember loved ones. Key to the holiday is the humorous and playful tone of the activities. This year’s celebration at the Armory featured dancing, singing, student art, and many artmaking activities, some of which CultureWorks provided! We brought a variety of options, including natural dyes, Mad Libs-style poetry, Pre-Columbian block printing carved by CW students/staff, and paper alebrijes. Check out some of the photos from the event below!
