CultureWorks Student Advisory Council honored the life of artist, art therapist, and foster care worker, Frances Plaggemars.
We kicked off our Student Advisory Council spring meetings a few weeks ago, by collaging beautiful handmade papers that were donated to us in honor of Fran Plaggemars. Fran is the late wife of David Plaggemars, and was an artist, art therapist, foster care worker, and bright light for so many.
When David heard about CultureWorks, he reached out to donate his wife’s supplies. He loved her dearly, and her studio remained in tact for a full year before he made the call. We had the tender honor of going through her studio last week: years of creative processes in a variety of mediums. David spoke so lovingly of Fran, as though the spark, respect, and humor never left after forty years of deep friendship.
We talked a little today about grief, and what moving through something looks like. Grieving is this knowledge that things can’t ever be the same; rather, you can honor that which has passed while you build newness around what once existed for a fresh way forward from what feels fractured.
Kind of like collage.
We even collaged Fran’s papers onto work she never finished—pieces of heritage peeping through pieces of the present, all in one beautiful composition.
